Ways to Donate
HIDA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and relies on community support to fund its programs and services. Donations to HIDA are tax deductible as allowed by law and can be designated to one of our five categories. Your generous donations are greatly valued and appreciated in the success and growth of our programs to support children and adults with dyslexia.
The Odyssey Project
The Odyssey Project was founded in 1996 as a scholarship program to provide one-on-one academic language therapy to disadvantaged children with dyslexia. Language therapists in the Project primarily use a researched based multi-sensory approach of teaching language skills to students with dyslexia. This program has grown from helping five students in 1997 to helping over 20 students at any one time. Your support will go towards the advancement of the Project, ensuring that more children and adults with dyslexia who demonstrate a need for financial assistance will get help.
Susan Walker Kowen Scholarship Fund
HIDA established the Susan Walker Kowen Scholarship Fund in 2000 to recognize Mrs. Kowen’s dedication and contributions to advancing the purpose of HIDA in Hawai`i. Contributions will go toward scholarships for educators and parents to attend HIDA-related training/educations programs. To date, nearly $9,000 in scholarships has been distributed to 37 educators and parents.
Public Awareness Projects
One of HIDA’s paramount goals is to increase awareness of dyslexia in our community. Throughout the year HIDA publishes a quarterly newsletter, hosts Dyslexia 101 workshops and presents at a variety of community conferences. Your support to our public awareness projects will allow us to continue to advance efforts in getting our message out to the community.
Teacher Training Workshops
To provide current and accurate information for Hawai`i’s educators, HIDA sponsors annual conferences in the spring and fall that highlight both national and local speakers. Recent topics have included research on the brain, genetics and reading, and the impact of learning disabilities on the individual and family. Throughout the year, HIDA also provides 1-10 day trainings in various multi-sensory approaches and community outreach workshops on a variety of topics including Dyslexia Basics, The IEP Process, & The Social/Emotional Impact of Dyslexia/SLD.
The Greatest Need
Donations to our Greatest Need are unrestricted funds that do not go directly to any particular project. Funds are used to support HIDA's mission at the discretion of the staff and Board of Directors. Your support to The Greatest Need is greatly valued and appreciated. Without your help, we would not be able to sustain much of the programs and progress we have made throughout the years.
